Smoking & Tobacco Use

VA healthcare facilities are smoke-free in accordance with VHA Directives 1085 and 1085.01. Smoking is inconsistent with VA’s health promotion and disease prevention mission, and VA wants to protect patients, employees, volunteers and visitors from this known health hazard by strictly enforcing the smoke-free policy.

This policy is consistent with the industry standard of care for patients. It will reduce the harmful effects of smoking, including exposure to second and third-hand smoke, as well as increase safety and reduce fire hazards caused by smoking. We are not alone in recognizing the importance of creating a smoke-free campus. As of 2014, 4,000 health care facilities and four national health care systems in the U.S. have implemented smoke-free grounds.

Smoke-Free policies for patients, visitors, contractors, volunteers, vendors and employees at VA Healthcare Facilities apply to cigarettes, cigars, pipes, any other combustion of tobacco and non-Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), including but not limited to electronic or e-cigarettes, vape pens or e-cigars.

Smoking in any VA owned or leased property including parking garages, healthcare system buildings and outpatient clinics will be strictly prohibited.
