About the Program
The Spinal Cord Injury Center at Cleveland VA Medical Center serves as a Center for veterans in Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Southern Michigan, and Western New York with Spinal cord injuries or disabilities .
The SCI Center operates in conjunction with SCI Support Clinics in local communities, providing rehabilitation for veterans throughout the region.
The Cleveland VA Medical Center SCI Center includes:
- Inpatient Unit
with 32 beds provides medical and rehabilitation services 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
- Outpatient Clinic
provides services including evaluations and rehabilitation therapies, interventions and consultations, nursing care, social work, psychological assessment and treatments, and other specialty areas.
- Home Health Services
provide professional home care for veterans who no longer need hospital or nursing home care and who cannot readily access the outpatient clinic.
Mission
The mission of Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center Spinal Cord System of Care (SCSC) program is to promote and maintain the health,
independence, quality of life, and productivity of veterans with spinal cord injury and disorders.
This mission is accomplished through a comprehensive health care delivery system that includes
- rehabilitation
- medical and surgical care
- patient and family education
- psychological, social, and vocational care
- research; education; advocacy; and professional training
Access to Care
Veterans may access program services through referrals from VA facilities and clinics,
the Department of Defense, community hospitals, and advocacy groups such as the Paralyzed Veterans of America.
A designated SCI Coordinator handles all referrals.
A formal SCI Registry is maintained by the SCSC.
The Cleveland VA SCSC offers annual preventive health examinations and readmission based on the needs of the individual.
